Slang, Drug Words, Foreign Phrases, Etc. from William Burroughs

The American novelist William S. Burroughs is best known for his novel, Naked Lunch. In this blog I will try to post alphabetically short definitions of difficult words in Naked Lunch. 


Others with greater knowledge than I--or with lesser knowledge--can add to the definitions of terms.

  1. The following is from the Miles and Graeerholtz "restored text" of Naked Lunch. If I am wrong in my definition, please correct me. This is an ongoing project and will add many more definitions soon I have stored on another computer.

    courvade--sympathetic or phantom prenancy

    djinn--a spirit that takes human form

    espontaneo--spectator who wants to join a bullfight

    gash--female

    in the box--jail

    poule de luxe--high class prostitute, person of leisure

    saignant--cooked rare

    souk--commercial center of an Arab City
